I am a hands-on Principal Engineer and engineering leader available for contract work. I architect the system and write the production code, and I can also run the org, mentor managers and engineers, and present to the board. After developing software for 10 years in a zero-to-one startup, I served as a Product and Engineering Leader at Daptiv (acquired by Planview), AWS, and Smartsheet. I still can’t stop coding in my spare time. I am a regular open source contributor and a top 4% overall contributor on Stack Overflow.

Available for contract and fractional engagements. Hire Me.

Experience

award In 2020, I received a Tech Up-and-Comer award for industry impact.

Fractional CTO & Software Engineering Consultant — Independent

2022–present (consulting periodically since 2014)

I help B2B companies build, ship, and operate cloud software — from "we have an idea" through production systems serving mission-critical workloads. Engagements below.

Principal Engineer (Contract) — Confidential public safety technology company

2024–present

Hands-on across the stack of a 911 emergency-response platform used by emergency communication centers. Highlights:

  • Built LLM-based keyword detection over live 911 call transcripts — schema-validated model responses, confidence and speaker filtering, per-agency configuration, and a false-positive/true-positive regression corpus built from real customer samples.
  • Delivered real-time text-to-911 and inter-agency chat: session handling, agency-to-agency call transfer, subscription and notification behavior, and role-based access — plus a mock protocol server so the whole flow is testable locally and in every environment.
  • Shipped live video to 911, including the operator experience and an end-to-end test strategy with a production guard so tests can never contact a real caller.
  • Modernized the frontend platform of a large legacy monorepo: Webpack 4→5, Nx-driven CI on GitHub Actions replacing three legacy workflows, and 15+ microfrontends consolidated into a single app (765 files, +2,397/−4,289) behind a CI guard against route collisions.
  • Wired Playwright end-to-end suites into Argo Rollouts as a promotion metric, so a failing test aborts the rollout — including the cross-account Terraform and IAM work to let those tests run as Kubernetes jobs in other AWS accounts.
  • Improved production observability: accurate portal sourcemaps, unhandled API failures surfaced to both operators and Sentry, and a triage-reporting CLI that reconstructs what each weekly triage session actually changed.

React, TypeScript, Redux Toolkit, Python, Bazel, Nx, Playwright, Kubernetes/Helm/ArgoCD, Terraform, and GitHub Actions.

Co-Founder & Lead Engineer — Tayle

2025–present

AI-powered storytelling platform. Real-time voice interviewing with LLMs, WebRTC audio streaming in the browser, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools driving the AI interviewer.

Principal Technical Product Manager, Platform — Glide

2024

Led and built AI-assisted app-building features and scalable data-source integrations. Took Glide Creator — an AI assistant that builds complete apps for non-technical users — from concept to customer launch in five weeks as team lead and developer.

Head of Engineering & Product — Vouched

2022–2023

Led a 15-person engineering and product organization at an AI identity-verification company, including a VP of AI and a VP of Engineering. Moved deployments from bi-weekly to multiple per day and grew automated testing from zero to more than 100 tests per merge.

Senior Director, Engineering & Product Management — Smartsheet

2015–2022

Over six years I grew and led engineering and product organizations from roughly 30 to 50 people, including engineering managers. I supported the teams operating the core platform — Sharing, Login, Users, and Enterprise Administration — and at other times the teams building Automated Workflows, Communications, Navigation, and Integrations. Launched Automated Workflows, Conversations, the Home Landing Experience, and dozens of integrations, operating at millions of users.

Senior Product Manager — Amazon Web Services

2014–2015

Grew Amazon Cognito usage by more than 250%, launched Cognito Events to trigger Lambda on data updates, and wrote the proposal for what became Cognito User Pools.

Earlier

Technical Product Manager at Daptiv (acquired by Planview), and Group Product Manager at Data Dynamics (acquired by GrapeCity), where I started my career as the first employee of a startup building SDKs for developers.

I love to build – especially with others. You can see some of my open source activity on Github Github or Stack Overflow Stack Overflow.

Software Engineering Experience

Lately I code most with TypeScript/JavaScript, Node.js, React, REST APIs, and various databases. I have operated reliable and secure cloud services for millions of users and I know my way around AWS, GCP and Kubernetes. I perform deep data analysis in Python/Pandas/Jupyter & SQL. I'm also capable in C#/.NET, C/C++ and I love learning something new and I learn fast. I love surrounding myself with the highest-performing frontend, backend and site-reliability engineers.

Product Management Experience

Product Management is an integral part of making software successful for business. I have managed dozens of product managers and executed the role myself as an individual contributor. I translate the executive team's vision into requirements that engineers can build. I interview customers and prospects to validate and refine the product. I provide feedback iteratively to engineering to ensure things are built rapidly to meet customer need. Above all, I work right-along side with the engineering team every day.

From defining product strategy, to embedding with engineers to deliver a feature and everything in between, I help teams deliver software that customers use. I do so by clarifying customer needs and making smart tradeoff decisions. I support product launch through close collaboration with marketing, customer success, and sales teams to boost sales and retention.

I support executives by analyzing customer feedback, market opportunity and competitive landscape, and then synthesizing this into a product strategy that helps align the team for execution to get results, to raise a seed round, or write your S-1.
